Coleman has been making camping equipment for over 100 years and has amassed a reputation for quality products. Their range of camping stoves is impressive as they cater to campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Coleman manufactures large and small camping stoves, stoves that use different fuel types, and one or two-burner stoves. They even offer a “Fold N Go” stove that can be folded up when not used.
This review takes a detailed look at the Coleman Camp Propane Grill/Stove +. This model has a push-button ignition for matchless lighting.
Size and Weight
The dimensions of the Coleman Propane Grill/Stove+ are: (LxWxH) 23.9 x 12.3 x 7.7 inches. It fits a 10-in. pan and pot on the stove area.
It is the right size for one or two people, but it is not recommended for more than two. There is quite a bit of space devoted to the grill. A small pot or pan can be used on the stove side. If you want to use medium-sized cookware, you can place the windshield down and center the cooking vessel on the burner. One windshield can hold the lid upright.
Coleman customer service states the weight of this Coleman grill/stove is around 13 lbs. It doesn't take up much space, and carrying it from your vehicle to the campsite shouldn't be too much of an ordeal.
Ease of Use
This propane camp stove is easy to use. When setting it up, place the stove on a flat, stable surface. The four nonslip feet keep the unit from moving. It has a hinged lid that is clasped closed when the stove is not being used, and once this is opened, the two side panels can be attached to it to act as a shield the cooking area from the wind.
Incidentally, if you do not need the side panels to be used as windshields, they can be folded flat and used as trays to hold ingredients, utensils, or condiments.
Before attaching the propane gas cylinder using the included regulator, make sure the control knobs are turned off. This unit is designed to work with a 16-ounce propane cylinder tank. However, with the proper high-press propane hose and adapter such as this one, you can connect to a large propane tank. If you use this hose, be aware it screws in counterclockwise.
The Coleman Propane Grill/Stove+ used matchless ignition technology. Once you push the button spark ignitor, the flame should come on. If for some reason, the ignitor does not work, a lighter or matches can be used.
We are referring to what this Coleman Propane Grill/Stove enables you to cook. One limitation of this model is that you can’t prepare meals using pots and pans on the grill side as it will damage the grill grate.
First, once you have lit either or both of the burners, they can be adjusted up or down. There are 2 temperature zones - high and low.
The stove and the grill each have temperature control. Some reviewers have commented that it is difficult to control the temperature since the dial adjustments are relatively coarse. It is easy to boil water on this model but more difficult if you want low heat.
One difference from some other camping stoves is the grill aspect. Whereas most stoves restrict you to boiling or frying food, with this, you can grill it too. This adds even more scope to what meals you can create.
The grill/stove combination means you can be cooking steak on the grill while your vegetables are boiling in a pot, or you can be heating your soup while you toast some bread on the grill. These are two of the many cooking options that no doubt you are thinking of already.
Since we aren’t sure how thick the nonstick coating is on the grill, it’s probably best to use non-metal utensils to flip or turn your food.
When it comes to camping stoves, one factor is the heat output. This determines the types of dishes you can cook with your stove and how quickly those meals can be cooked. Heat output also influences how quickly water can be boiled for hot drinks or cleaning purposes.
While this stove has two cooking functions, each of the burners associated with them has the same output; 10,000 BTUs, giving you a total output of 20,000 BTUs. This gives you a lot of heating and cooking power, meaning you can cook meals quicker and boil water faster. The burner heats the water quickly (2 cups water in 2 minutes), and food is cooked quickly.
This product, as well as many other Coleman stoves, has PerfectFlow™ technology that keeps the heat consistent, and PerfectHeat™ technology that ensures efficient fuel usage.
It is not just the cooking features that make a stove worth having, but also some less exciting features. That applies to aspects such as the cleaning and maintenance of a stove.
We will start with the cooking grate on the pot burner, made from nickel-chrome and the grill grate, made from die-cast aluminum. These grates are removable grates, which makes cleanup very easy.
This Coleman propane grill/stove has another feature that very few other camping stoves have. It is a removable drip tray that collects all the grease and fat that has dripped from the grill. If you spill something or fat or water splashes over the side of a pan or pot, these drips should fall through the grates and into the drip trays below. If you want, you can remove the grates and wipe away any mess created or remove the drip tray and clean it separately.
The grease tray and removable grill part are dishwasher safe.
Once you have finished cooking, allow the stove to cool down, clean, and are ready to store away until the next time you fold in the side panels, close the lid, and then secure it using the clasp.
The combination of this Coleman Camp Propane Grill/Stove + with a push-button ignition will appeal to many car campers and truck drivers. Especially those who want the option to cook a much more varied and healthier selection of meals.
It is easy to use and clean and provides a variety of cooking options. The single burner can be used to boil water, heat vegetables, or warm soup. The grill side can be used for a wide variety of foods. A three-year limited warranty is provided.
On the downside, the burner area is relatively small, and when cooking on the grill, you have to flip and rotate for even cooking. Some consumers have commented the ignition switch is not reliable.
